Cloud Cache Access Configuration
AS-SET Configuration Guide for connectivity to cloud resources.
1. Overview
This document provides technical instructions for configuring AS-SET objects in the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) database to enable access to cache servers through the FD-IX network.
Purpose
Cloud cache access allows FD-IX members to directly peer with content delivery networks (CDNs), reducing latency and bandwidth costs by serving popular content from local cache servers within the exchange fabric.
1.1 Benefits
- Reduced Latency: Direct access to cache servers eliminates multiple network hops, reducing RTT by up to 80%
- Cost Savings: Decreased transit bandwidth usage typically results in 30-50% cost reduction
- Improved Reliability: Multiple cache nodes provide redundancy and automatic failover
- Enhanced Performance: Local content delivery improves end-user experience
1.2 Architecture Overview
┌─────────────┐ BGP with AS-SET ┌──────────────┐ Cache Routes ┌─────────────┐ │ Your ASN │ ◄─────────────────────► │ FD-IX Route │ ◄─────────────────► │ AS14333 │ │ (AS64512) │ │ Servers │ │ (MS Cache) │ └─────────────┘ └──────────────┘ └─────────────┘ │ │ │ │ └──────────────────────── Direct Peering Path ────────────────────────────────┘
2. Prerequisites
Before configuring cloud cache access, ensure the following requirements are met:
2.1 Required Resources
Resource | Requirement | Notes |
---|---|---|
ASN | Valid Autonomous System Number | Registered with ARIN or appropriate RIR |
ARIN Account | Active ARIN Online account | With permissions to manage AS-SET objects |
FD-IX Port | Active connection | Any FD-IX location (1G, 10G, or 100G) |
BGP Session | Established peering | With FD-IX route servers (RS1/RS2) |
2.2 Network Requirements
Parameter | Specification | Recommended |
---|---|---|
IP Version | IPv4 (required) | IPv4 + IPv6 dual-stack |
BGP Communities | Standard communities | Large communities support |
Prefix Limit | 1,000 prefixes minimum | 5,000 prefixes |
MTU Size | 1500 bytes | 1500 bytes |
3. AS-SET Configuration
The AS-SET object creates a relationship between your ASN and AS14333, authorizing cache access.
3.1 ARIN Account Access
- Navigate to
https://account.arin.net
- Log in with your ARIN Online credentials
- Select "Manage Resources" from the main menu
- Click on "AS-SETs" in the resource management section
3.2 Creating AS-SET
Follow ARIN naming conventions for AS-SET objects:
AS-SET Naming Format: AS-[ORGANIZATION]-[PURPOSE] Examples: AS-ACMECORP-FDIX AS-EXAMPLE-CACHE
- Click "Create AS-SET" button
- Enter your chosen AS-SET name
- Add description: "AS-SET for FD-IX Cloud Cache"
- Set maintainer to your organization's maintainer object
3.3 Adding AS Members
Add both AS14333 and your ASN as members:
as-set: AS-EXAMPLE-FDIX descr: AS-SET for FD-IX Microsoft Cache access members: AS14333 members: AS64512 mnt-by: MAINT-AS64512 changed: [email protected] 20250106 source: ARIN
Note
The order of AS members does not matter. Both ASNs must be present for proper authorization. Changes typically propagate within 15-30 minutes.
4.1 Support Escalation
If you aren't sure your traffic is going to our cloud resources:
- Collect BGP session logs and configuration
- Document AS-SET configuration in ARIN
- Contact FD-IX support with collected information
